Authenticity

The 2024 Summer Olympics just came to a close. Our family will definitely miss it. We had so much fun cheering on the athletes. The people we particularly loved watching were those who are completely themselves. Very comfortable in their own skin. Marching to their own little drummer. We loved Snoop Dogg's antics, and The Pommel Horse Guy's cute nerd glasses and cubing skills. We loved Sha'Carri's bejeweled nails and Martha Stewart's knowledge of dressage.

One of the Merriam Webster definitions of authentic is to be "true to one's own personality, spirit, or character." Synonyms of authentic include genuine, original, real, actual, bona fide, true, and legitimate.

We are drawn to things that are original, real, and unique. So why do we spend so much time trying to fit in, blend in, and play small? People who are very comfortable in their own skin are natural magnets. They are interesting and fun. Because they are so relaxed being themselves, they give each of us permission to be ourselves.

Think of times when you have distinctly felt not yourself. When you have been "on" for a period of time, putting on a good show and a good face. Its exhausting. We all have to do this for various aspects of our lives, but if you can find a way to slightly shift towards bringing your more real self to more scenarios, you will be more relaxed in all scenarios. It's ok to say no, to say you really don't like something, to like something that no one else does, to wear clothes that aren't what others choose. It's all more than ok. Because when you do, you give others permission to do the same.

If you are finding that your work or life is exhausting, consider that this may be a small factor. At home, at work, and in social situations, could you be just a little more you? It may be a transition at first, but I'm guessing you will feel less drained and more fulfilled. If comparison is the thief of joy, authenticity is the delivery service. Shed your actor and find more joy, genuine connection, and contentment.
